The 8 Pillars – #3, Engagement of People
Engagement of people: At Regal Packaging Services, we recognize that people are the essence of any good business, and their full involvement enables them towards success.
According to an article in Frontiers in Psychology, “Empowering leadership involves delegating authority to employees, enhancing their intrinsic motivation, and stimulating their sense of responsibility and desire for growth, leading to performance achievements (Zhang and Bartol, 2010).
As a supervisor, I know it can be difficult to trust that the employees under your charge should be given authority to make decisions on a day-to-day basis that will affect the product or sales of your company. It’s easy to get caught in the trap of micro-management, checking the details at every turn and spending time overseeing the minutiae and losing the proverbial forest for the trees. But as someone who has worked in several different places with many supervisors, the most freeing job I have ever had is working here at Regal Packaging Services in the Testrods.com division.
Knowing the capabilities of his employees from the outset, my boss has trusted his staff to make decisions that affect our product and the way we operate. That’s not to say that any of us are given carte blanche to run wild. The boss knows not only our capabilities, but the character of the people he hired, and that’s really the bottom line. An employee can have all the right skills and training, but if he can’t be trusted, then all that education and talent may well go to waste. On the other hand, hiring someone who is teachable and trustworthy can prove to be a lifetime investment in the company.
I certainly came into the food safety industry as a neophyte. Like many, I didn’t know or understand how metal detection and x-ray inspection plays a significant role in the food industry. And I knew even less about the manufacturing or sales of metal detection and x-ray inspection verification test pieces. When you find someone who is an adaptive learner and has a trainable attitude, the results can be amazing.
There’s a saying that successful companies know how to put the right people in the right seats on the bus, and we’ve been fortunate to accomplish just that here in the Testrods division. Our sales have gone up by an average of 13.6% per year over the last decade. We have a superior product and some successful marketing strategies, however, behind the website and the company sign is a team of dedicated professionals who have been empowered for leadership.
Deep Engagement
All employees are encouraged to pursue training by way of research, reading, webinars, and internal instructional sessions with our sales and tech staff. An article in Forbes last year noted that, “To enhance engagement at the team level, team leaders can encourage members to collaboratively define their collective aspirations. This approach empowers the team to shape a shared vision of their future. (Felice Tilin, GroupWorksConsulting LLC).” At Testrods.com, we collaborate with one another on a regular basis so that everyone has greater investment in the company’s outcomes. We work together to determine the best way to improve a standard product or create new and custom products. And when it comes time to brainstorm new standard products, as we did with the addition of acetal cards in 2014 and thermoform cards in 2016, we gather the team to make sure we’re all assessing the needs of the market. It’s our goal to provide our customers with items that will increase their quality control standards and enhance efficiency.
Every person on the team is evaluated on a semi-annual basis and we encourage an open dialogue as to strengths and weaknesses as well as discussing job satisfaction, and a sense of fulfillment and purpose in job roles. We believe that as each person matures in their position, it only serves the company and our customers better. We work hard to prove we know what we’re doing and gain your trust as you put food in the marketplace. Call us at 866-691-8560 or email testrods@testrods.com.
